El Niño Expected to Bring Wetter Winter to Bay Area

El Niño has officially developed, with federal officials estimating a 63% chance of it intensifying into a very strong or 'Super El Niño' this year.
This phenomenon occurs when tropical trade winds weaken, allowing warm ocean waters to shift toward the Pacific Coast, altering the jet stream and increasing the likelihood of stormier weather.

Why It's Important?

The anticipated wetter conditions could lead to several risks for California, including coastal flooding, mudslides, and higher sea levels. Atmospheric rivers may bring heavy rainfall, increasing the potential for flash flooding in urban and low-lying areas. The Sierra Nevada could see major snow events, which may disrupt travel and infrastructure. On the positive side, the increased precipitation could reduce wildfire risks across the state. However, the disruption of ocean upwelling due to El Niño may impact marine ecosystems, raising concerns for local fisheries and sea life.
